Some days, your brain just shuts off.
You’re not physically tired, but mentally? It’s like standing in a space with no light—no direction, no clarity.
That was me earlier today.
I sat at my desk, staring at my screen, feeling mentally fogged out. I wasn’t sad or anxious—I just couldn’t move.
And then—almost without thinking—I reminded myself of a principle I use every day in lighting design:
✨ Layered Lighting = Layered Clarity
One of the first things I learned in design was:
“Layered lighting brings depth, clarity, and warmth to a space.”
When a room is lit too flat, too bright, or too uneven, it feels uncomfortable. Unsettled. Even stressful.
And guess what? Our minds aren’t that different.
- Too much input = overstimulation
- Too little focus = disorientation
- No warmth or intention = mental fatigue
🎯 Design Meets Mindset
In moments of mental fog, I remembered something Jordan Peterson said:
“You need to aim at something. Even if it’s not perfect.”
That line stuck with me—because it mirrors my work.
When a space feels overwhelming, I don’t redo the entire layout.
I just find one focal point.
I highlight one thing.
And from there, clarity starts to return.
So, I tried that with my mind.
I didn’t try to fix my whole day.
I just organized one small surface in my space.
That tiny action? It felt like switching on a warm light in a dark room.
The fog didn’t disappear, but the energy began to shift.
🧠Lighting and Mindset Have a Lot in Common
Both need:
- Layers (different levels of intensity and focus)
- Intentionality (where and how you direct your energy)
- Warmth (softness, clarity, and care)
Even the smallest shift can relight everything.
🔦 Your Turn: Bring Light Back In
If your brain feels stuck or foggy today, try this:
- Pick one tiny thing you can do (don’t overthink it)
- Create a point of focus or warmth—physically or mentally
- Let that be your personal “spotlight”
💬 I’d love to hear from you:
- What’s your go-to move when you feel mentally foggy?
- Have you ever used your environment—lighting, music, scent—to shift your mindset?
- What’s one space in your home or workspace that could use a “light-layering” refresh?
Drop your thoughts in the comments—I read and appreciate every one. 🌱
